He also describes his process of (contextual) recovery and translation and combination of the 33 sayings common to Q1 and The Gospel of Thomas (revised total number of 136 Sayings, I believe) for a fresh look at the oldest written documentation of Jesus Sayings / Lessons. As I write this, the Author has a web page where sample pages are found. I tried to contact him, then discovered that he had only recently passed - and that he lived in my current city of residence! Buckner does some things in The Original Teachings of Jesus that no one else has done to date.

First, he picks the ideal texts to translate and combine. The Gospel of Thomas and the original layer of the Q Source document form the largest collection of authentic sayings of Jesus.

Second, Buckner injects the words of a Galilean mystic into this book. "God" is the "One." "Heaven" is the "World of Light." "Father" is the "Giver of Life."

Third, the author organizes the sayings so that they flow and build as Jesus would actually share his teachings. For purists, the random order, determined by oral transmission, is reserved in the appendices.

At points, this translation, as in The Lord's Prayer, is hauntingly beautiful.

Buckner's background in science and psychology show through in his commentary, which may raise a few eyebrows.

This is a must-have reference for seekers of The Historical Jesus.
FOR ME, I'M ALWAYS GRATEFUL TO READ QUOTES FROM THOMAS AND THE DIRECT QUOTES ARE WONDERFUL YET I SENSED THE 'CONTEXTUAL EXPLANATION' AND THE 'WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TODAY?' SEEMED TO BE ONLY DR. BUCKNER'S PERCEPTION AS A REVEREND AND PSYCHIATRIST....I GUESS I WAS HOPING FOR A VIEW LIKE DR.LAMSA'S WHO WAS BORN AND RAISED IN THE THE MIDDLE EAST, SPEAKING THE ARAMIC LANGUAGE AND LIVING THEIR HUMBLE DAILY LIVES WITH IT'S CUSTOMS.
