About That Night An FBI/US Attorney Novel Julie James 9780425246955 Books Reviews
Really a continuation of the previous book, which focused on Jordan. This book focuses on Jordan's twin brother Kyle. Enjoyed the story, and would have awarded 5 stars, but did not follow the format of the first two books. First two books set the crime stage. In first 2 books, 25% to 35% of book elapses before the woman and man meet.
On the up side, I learned a new term meet-cute, which turns out describes a plot element in romance novels/movies. My education is now complete.
"I will never, ever regret stopping you from walking out of my life a second time."
THE STORY Almost a decade ago, Rylann Pierce and Kyle Rhodes met as graduate students. The next time they meet they are on opposite sides of a courtroom where Rylann is an Assistant US Attorney and Kyle is having his felony prison sentence reduced. Kyle is known as the Twitter Terrorist for his actions shutting down Twitter for two days after his girlfriend dumped him online. When Rylann and Kyle end up working together on another criminal investigation where Kyle is a witness, the two find much in common including an intense attraction. Rylann, however, knows that they have no future because a relationship with Kyle would torpedo her career.
OPINION I loved this one. It was witty and clever and smart. Kyle and Rylann are smart people who talk to one another! I appreciate that Kyle has made mistakes and that he has to live with them and remake his life. It would have been easy to erase his past to make the happy ending easier, but instead, he has to struggle with his mistakes and forge a new future for himself. I like the depiction of Rylann as a career woman who is competent and smart and dedicated to making her own way. The fact that Rylann's career and Kyle's past create conflict makes the story interesting and grounded in reality. This was a book that encouraged page turning because the story was compelling and fast paced. The relationship between Rylann and Kyle is sexy and definitely of the hot variety! I especially liked this story because of the depth and complexity of the story between these two likeable characters.
WORTH MENTIONING I especially liked in this book the serious look at Rylann's career and the necessity of her making decisions which foreclose other options for her. Often in similar books everything comes out rosy and easily. Here, difficult choices are acknowledged and made.
FINAL DECISION Like prior Julie James' books, ABOUT THAT NIGHT is filled with witty banter, sarcastic humor and a fun attitude. I liked this one because there was more depth to the relationship and more personal difficulties for the characters to overcome.
CONNECTED BOOKS ABOUT THAT NIGHT is the third book in the FBI/US Attorney series. The book can be read as a standalone.
STAR RATING I give this book 5 stars.
I had a really hard time tuning out my Inner Skeptic as I read this. Kyle and Rylann (pet peeve characters with names I can't pronounce) met nine years ago at a bar in grad school. They made a date, but Kyle's mom died and he couldn't keep it. Somehow, they both still remember the night they met after all this time.
Fast forward to present day Rylann is an ambitious federal prosecutor who has just relocated to Chicago after breaking up with the guy she thought she'd marry. She is organized and driven and likes to make Life Plans. Kyle is a computer genius who got dumped, got drunk, and hacked into Twitter, shutting it down for two days and breaking a slew of Federal laws. He's just been released from jail because his sister cooperated with the FBI in exchange for a reduction in his sentence... something Rylann says out loud in court during Kyle's re-sentencing hearing.
That's when my Inner Skeptic started to cringe. I'm a prosecutor, too, and when prosecutors say in open court, on the record, "So-and-so cooperated with the cops," So-and-so runs an unreasonably high risk of winding up dead. The identity of a cooperating witness would never be so cavalierly exposed.
The main romantic conflict between the couple is that, as a big shot Assistant U.S. Attorney, Rylann just can't date an ex-con, especially not a hacker ex-con like Kyle. And that's true she can't. She'd lose the respect of her boss and coworkers, the cops and agents she works with, the defense attorneys she goes up against. She'd probably lose whatever security clearance she has as a Federal employee, and then she'd lose her job. Someone as driven and ambitious as Rylann would never, ever risk it... But of course she does, and of course the fallout is nothing like as bad as she'd feared, and they all live HAE.
Whatever.
