I am not sure why, but I became a Colleen Coble fan late in her writing career. I had sporadically read some of her books, but didn't get into them that much. That has changed over the last few years, and I have become an avid reader of her books. In fact, I have gone back and read around 20 of her books in the last month, many that I had read before.

Her best series, in my opinion, is her Rock Harbor Series. The characters are impossible not to like, and everything about the series is just top notch. It has been several years since the series ended, so I was a bit dubious about another book in the series so long after the rest.... but I was wrong to be dubious. It probably helps that I just re-read the other books a few weeks ago, but this book seamlessly fell in with the rest..... and was a totally awesome 5-stars read.

The suspense and drama was great in the book, but there was a message throughout the book that Coble got across, of true beauty being what is inside. The hero of the story, Boone, is a man who got one side of his face scarred in a fire. As a result, his fiancee left him. He thinks no woman could ever love him, yet the heroine of the story is attracted to him largely in part because of who he is inside. The message is there that we work too hard to impress people with what they see of us outwardly, and too often don't work on our character and everything else inside enough. On the flip side, the bad guy in the story had perfect looks, but was an evil killer.

This paragraph sums up the theme and message of the book:

"Scars and all, his face was so handsome, so beloved. Her experience had taught her of how the soul was the repository of beauty. Unlike the Phantom (of the opera) who was as ugly on the inside as he was on the outside, Boone's scars hid an astoundingly beautiful soul. She had spent too much of her life worrying about the face she presented to the world, and much too little time on the character she needed to be developing every day."

Thanks, Colleen for writing not just a great suspense novel that was hard to put down, but also for including this great and needful message.

Beneath Copper Falls Rock Harbor Series Colleen Coble 9780718090715 Books Reviews

I must admit that I accidentally purchased this book, but I didn't have the heart to return it. I'm so glad I didn't. Coble has long been a favorite of mine in this genre, but it's been some time since I've picked up one of her books--if only I could read as much as I used to! The purchase of this book turned out to be a very happy accident as it sucked me in and reminded me all over again why I love this author's writing--layered plots, well-developed characters, and beautiful lessons all woven together into a story I didn't want to put down. Yep, Coble books will always remain on my TBR pile)
Beneath Copper Falls is a plethora of misleading clues. So many characters, so much globe hopping, it was hard to keep up. The description of the blizzard had me gasping for breath and reaching for a blanket. My great disappointment was the dispatch of a co-villain without explanation, and a couple of ropes were left dangling in a stranger's house. I like Colleen Coble as a writer and would recommend this book, but also advise that you approach it with pen and paper to write down all the characters to keep them straight. Or maybe I'm the only one who has that problem.
This book deals with the difficult but all-too-real subjects of stalking and abuse. I would suggest that the book include a telephone number for a domestic violence hotline, as well as an epilogue listing the ways women can recognize if they're in an unhealthy relationship (isolation, temper, abuse, etc.).

That being said, this book held my attention. I figured out the criminal about a third of the way through the book. It's a stunning realization no matter when you figure it out. I did need to suspend disbelief (the relationships between some of the victims were incredible). Also, some threads were left hanging--not wanting to give spoilers, so I'll just say Boone was teaching Dana something that never came into play.

All in all, this was a gripping book. Good for a summer read.
The Rock Harbor books, in addition to being my intro to Colleen Coble, are some of my favorite books ever. It was wonderful to "touch base" with some of my Rock Harbor friends and to meet some new ones. The most amazing thing to me about these books is that I CAN revisit favorite characters, but the plot and theme are very different in each one. The theme of this one, outward appearances vice inner character, is very well developed, without being preachy. The action is fast paced and engrossing. I can't really do a synopsis without spoilers and this is just too good a read to do that. So, I recommend that you read this book. You don't have to have read the previous books to thoroughly enjoy Beneath Copper Falls. However, if you haven't read any of the original Rock Harbor books, I think you might just want to do that when you are done with this one. Enjoy!
Colleen Coble’s latest suspenseful tale is also a welcome return to Rock Harbour which is a series that I️ have read some but not all of the available titles.

911 dispatcher Dana Newel has returned to her family home after escaping an abusive relationship. But she soon realises that sometimes that even in the most tranquil of settings can still not fully protect us from the outside world - as the very things she ran from have followed her here.

This was a truly suspenseful tale with lots of twists and turns - there seemed to be multiple possible ‘baddies’ and just the right amount of romance as well.

The setting was also magically rendered - vivid description so that you could almost feel the chill of the air and the frozen landscape. Very atmospheric.

Recommended reading especially on a cold, rainy weekend curled up by the fire of course.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher via The Fiction Guild, and was not required to post a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.
