Kantor does that here - we can actually feel the Southern California air and see the light of it too, through her clever wordsmithing.

The story unfolds simply, and builds to just the right tempo; swinging back and forth between chapters told from the mother (Eve's) point of view, and the daughter's (Audrey) point of view. This woven storytelling reflects the beautiful weaving of lives; mothers and daughters and grandmother and the exploration of expectation. We are left with our own inquiry into what we ourselves believe we are meant to give (and to receive) as a mother and as a daughter, and the dashed realities that accompanies these hopes and expectations.

I was worried that the mother daughter relationship might not work for me when I began the story. But again, more tricks up her sleeve, Kantor is able to make the world of the teen daughter, who is trapped in a certain childhood world, work on the page. There's an element of Tennessee Williams here, Kantor pays some homage to Glass Menagerie in this beautifully wrought first novel. So, Carolyn See and Tennessee Williams wrapped in one beautiful debut novel. What more can you ask for? How about novel #2? Maybe a sequel, Ms. Kantor!

This debut novel is a wonderful piece about the struggle between mother and daughter. While Audrey's story doesn't have to end here, I will look forward to new stories from this author.
I found this book spellbinding, vividly written, dynamic, sensual, and heart grabbing. I couldn't put it down. The characters were so well defined and the story flowed amazingly. I think Helen did an exquisite job with this book.
I picked it up then couldn't put it down. I loved the theme of a mother trying to raise a daughter the opposite of how she was raised. And the ending really hits the right chord sad but hopeful, as rites of passage can often be.
I enjoyed this book immensely! The story draws you in, makes you uncomfortable at times, but There's a lot of beauty in it. The characters are complex and 3 dimensional. I'll be interested in Helen's next book!
An imaginative coming of age story of a girl stuck in childhood fantasies and the unorthodox means her mother uses to get her to move on. Speaks to the contrasts of life stages of three generations of women in one family. Brimming with vivid and insightful descriptions of characters and place. The open ending is satisfying while still allowing the reader to ruminate as to what will happen to this girl. The beauty of the writing makes me want to read more by this author. My one suggestion is to narrow the focus a bit more in future work.
You can read the basic premise of the book in the publishers blurb. What I found particularly compelling in this mother/daughter saga was that although from Eve's angle we see her daughter Audrey (accurately) as not fitting in very well with her age group, the world also makes sense as seen through Audrey's eyes. I was impressed with the way her vision and sensitivities become our vision and sensitivities, almost without our knowing.
Recommended read. I was captivated throughout the book by many different things going on, but yet they all intertwined in a way that weren't too much. Eve certainly made some interesting decisions and it shows that the bond between a mother and a daughter runs deep, is painful and sometimes controlling. I enjoyed the three generation effect the story had and while at first I thought the ending was brief, after reading the last chapter twice to make sure I didn't miss anything, I found that I wasn't disappointed in the ending. Great job for this authors first novel.
